The Louisiana Latino Project:
The Louisiana Latino Project provides HIV testing and counseling and medical/HIV referral services in the Greater New Orleans area.
The director of the program is Rodrigo Gamarra.
As prevention outreach workers, they provide education and awareness. A major aspect of this is testing for HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). Free rapid oral tests are offered, and they are completely confidential.
It is important to get tested, because in the early stages of infection, the person may not feel ill, but is still capable of transmitting the virus to others.
How is HIV transmitted?
The virus is transmitted from an infected person through sexual relations
(vaginal, anal or oral) or by sharing needles. Also, an infected mother can
transmit it to her baby during pregnancy or by breast feeding.
Is There a Cure for HIV?
There is still no cure available for HIV/AIDS. There are medications available to prolong one’s life and treat the symptoms. Prevention is the key.
The resource guide for Spanish speakers in the greater New Orleans Area has been assembled by the efforts of the following volunteers and organizations:
Gina Lutz and Sarah Harden from the Common Ground Clinic, Narda Hernandez from the Tulane Clinic at Covenant House, Katrina Badger from Tulane University and Mikal Giancola from the Louisiana HIV/AIDS Program.
Translations were done by the Louisiana Latino Project.
A special thanks to Praveen Ranganath for creating the web site,
and to Lalo Vergel for its redesign.
